Today’s post is in response to an email I received back in July. It's not sports-related, but I think it's relevant, considering most female coaches and athletes tend to be pretty " Type A." I know this has been a struggle for me, so hopefully, this is relatable to the general female audience my site appeals to.
Hi Coach! I would love to know your thoughts on the Proverbs 31 woman.

Good morning, and thanks for the email! The Proverbs 31 woman is often "held up" as the ideal example of a strong, capable, and virtuous woman... It's the gold standard in Biblical terms. She is described as a woman of noble character who is hardworking, resourceful, and intelligent. She manages her household well, cares for her family, and engages in various business ventures. She is a woman of strength and dignity and is respected in her community (personal or professional).
For many modern women, especially those with Type A personalities (self-speaking here) who are driven, ambitious, and goal-oriented, the idea of submitting to their spouses is sometimes seen as conflicting with their desire for independence and autonomy. BUT, it's important to note that submission in the context of a committed relationship does not mean giving up one's strength or identity. It is about mutual respect, love, and partnership. In my opinion, submission is a willingness to work together with your partner, listen to their perspective, and make decisions together. You aren't in competition. Ultimately, you must trust them to do what's best for both of you.
For a Type A like myself, submitting to a partner can be a challenge, but it is not a sign of weakness. It requires introspection and recognizing that true strength comes from vulnerability, humility, and the ability to trust and rely on your partner. It is about finding a balance between being assertive and being open to compromise... It's also about being comfortable enough with the other person to allow them to be so masculine that our femininity doesn't need to be suppressed. For me, being a strong Proverbs 31 woman means being willing to communicate openly, be empathetic, and support my partner's goals and dreams. It means recognizing that true strength is not about controlling the other person but about working as a team.
