The Difference Between Confidence and Arrogance: How Athletes Find Balance

Updated: Feb 23, 2023

Finding a balance between cocky and confident can be difficult for college athletes. Remember that having confidence in yourself is essential, but it should not come at the expense of belittling or making fun of your competitors. Setting healthy boundaries with people who may attempt to bring you down is critical. Lastly, staying humble and focusing on doing what will improve you are both essential aspects of finding mental balance as a college athlete. The story of Job is an excellent example that we can look to for lessons on humility, as he faced immense turmoil but ultimately remained faithful to God throughout his trials.

Have confidence in yourself but don't belittle or put down others. Focus on being the best version of yourself rather than comparing yourself to others. Job 13:15 says, "Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him." This verse speaks to the importance of trusting and having faith in God's plan even when we don't understand it ourselves. The book of Job teaches us that having confidence in yourself is essential, even when life throws you curveballs. It encourages us to stay true to ourselves and our beliefs, no matter the difficulty or adversity we face. The story emphasizes the importance of resilience and perseverance in times of hardship to regain confidence when external forces have shaken it. Ultimately, Job's example shows us that we can trust ourselves even when outside circumstances threaten to take away our self-confidence.

Setting healthy boundaries with people who may attempt to bring you down is essential for maintaining a balanced and positive mindset. Don't allow negative influences to affect your self-confidence or derail you from achieving success. Job was surrounded by his friends during his time of trial and tribulation – but unfortunately, their advice to him was not always from a place of righteousness or understanding; instead they offered up mindless solutions that did not take into account Job's suffering (Job 16:2-3). As we can see from this example, it is essential to surround ourselves with trusted individuals who will offer support and sound counsel in our times of need.

On the other hand, God showed us through Job's story how powerful true friendship can be when we are supported by loving people who are willing to listen without judgment or criticism. Eliphaz provided a particularly compelling example here as he reminded Job to "trust in your Maker" rather than place blame on himself (Job 5:8). Ultimately, these examples show us that being around those who understand our predicament and provide wise words can often make all the difference during difficult times.

Staying humble and focusing on personal growth are critical aspects of finding mental balance as a college athlete. Celebrate your successes, recognize that there is always more to learn, and strive to be the best version of yourself! Job 42:3 says, "Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? Therefore have I uttered what I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not." This verse speaks to humility and trust in God's plan – even if we do not understand it all. It reminds us that life may bring unexpected hardships but when we remain humble and trust in Him, He will provide a way out of our troubles. The book of Job teaches us that a humble spirit and dependence on God's will can help us to maintain mental fortitude in the face of adversity. The story shows how Job kept his faith strong despite having been stripped of all that he had, and he could stay focused on his convictions even when those around him were trying to break down his spirit. This demonstrates the importance of trusting in God's plan for our lives, being resilient during hard times, and maintaining humility no matter our challenges.

I want to make a final point that athletes need to know when to bite their tongues and let things go. Being confident and having an air of cockiness can be helpful in certain situations, but it is also important not to overstep the boundaries of good sportsmanship. Keeping a level head and knowing when it is time to just let something go will help athletes stay focused on their goals instead of getting distracted by idle chatter or boasting. It also shows that they respect the game and their opponents, which will ultimately benefit them in the long run. Job 6:24, the Bible verse states: "Teach me, and I will hold my tongue; cause me to understand wherein I have erred." This statement is made by Job while struggling with the suffering that God has inflicted on him. He is asking for guidance from God to learn what he has done wrong and repent for it. By understanding where he went wrong, Job believes he can be redeemed from his suffering. This suggests that individual responsibility plays a vital role in one's faith journey – we must reflect upon our mistakes to grow closer to God. It also implies that humility should be practiced when seeking answers from a higher power – one must lay aside their pride and allow themselves to be taught by a wiser authority figure to find peace within oneself.

To truly reach our potential as college athletes, it's not just essential to have confidence and focus on personal growth but also to recognize that while successes should be celebrated, we must remain humble. By following the lessons of Job, college athletes can stay focused on being their best selves without losing sight of the importance of embracing humility and striving for continuous improvement. Any athlete can find success on and off the court through this balance between confidence and humility.
