Faith and Sports Nutrition

Writer: Ashley McDonoughAshley McDonough

Throughout my coaching career, I saw firsthand how athletes’ dietary choices were often influenced by their beliefs. Whether it was a commitment to vegetarianism (or its mature older brother veganism), the practice of fasting, or a dedication to ethical eating, these choices not only impacted their physical performance but also shaped their spiritual journeys. As a Christian and a vegan, my own dietary choices have been intertwined with my faith, and I believe that understanding this connection can empower athletes to make informed decisions that align with their values.

When I transitioned to a vegan lifestyle, it was not just about health or performance; it was a reflection of my ethics and, later, my faith. Many of the principles of veganism resonated with my Christian beliefs about stewardship of the Earth and compassion for all living beings. As I coached athletes, I encouraged them to consider how their food choices could reflect their values and performance. For some, this meant adopting a plant-based diet that emphasized sustainability and ethical treatment of animals. I saw athletes thrive on a vegan diet, not just in terms of their physical health but also in their mental clarity and spiritual well-being.

Fasting is another practice that many athletes incorporate into their routines, often influenced by their faith. In my own experience, fasting can serve as a powerful tool for self-discipline and spiritual growth. It allows athletes to focus on their relationship with God, providing an opportunity for reflection and renewal. I encouraged my athletes to consider fasting (in the off-season) not just as a physical challenge but as a way to deepen their faith and enhance their performance. When approached with intention, fasting can lead to breakthroughs both on and off the court.

Ethical eating is a concept that has gained traction in recent years, and for many athletes, it is a reflection of their faith. As a coach, I often discussed the importance of sourcing food responsibly and understanding where it comes from. I encouraged my athletes to think about the impact of their choices on the environment and the communities around them. By choosing to support local farmers or opting for organic produce, athletes can align their dietary choices with their faith, promoting a sense of responsibility and stewardship.

In my journey as a Christian and a vegan, I have learned that food is not just fuel; it is a means of connecting with God and with others. Sharing meals with teammates and developing a sense of community around food can create a powerful bond that enhances team dynamics. I often organized team meals that focused on plant-based options, allowing athletes to explore new flavors and cuisines while reinforcing the idea that our dietary choices can be an expression of our faith.

The intersection of faith and sports nutrition is a personal experience for each athlete. As I reflect on my experiences as a coach, I am reminded of the importance of encouraging athletes to explore their beliefs and how those beliefs can shape their dietary choices. By embracing a holistic approach to nutrition that honors their faith, athletes can not only enhance their performance but also cultivate a deeper connection to their spiritual lives. Whether it’s through vegetarianism, fasting, or ethical eating, the choices we make in the kitchen can profoundly impact our journey as athletes and as individuals of faith.
